What is Domino?

Domino is a popular game that involves stacking rectangular blocks on end in long lines. When one domino is tipped over, it causes the next domino in line to tip over, and so on. Eventually, the whole row of dominoes topples over. This chain reaction is often referred to as the “domino effect.” It’s also used as a metaphor for describing a series of events that start out small but ultimately have greater-and sometimes catastrophic-consequences.

A domino is a flat, thumb-sized rectangular block with a face divided into two parts each bearing from one to six pips or dots: 28 such pieces form a complete set. It is most commonly used for playing positional games where the players place dominoes edge to edge against each other such that the adjacent faces are identical or form a specified total (such as 5 to 5).

The word “domino” comes from an Italian verb meaning “fall.” The first domino to fall in these types of games sets off a chain reaction of one domino causing another and so on. As the series of dominoes falls, they can be arranged in a variety of patterns to create beautiful works of art. Some people even make 3D structures from the dominoes.

In addition to domino being a great game, the name is also associated with Domino’s Pizza. This fast food chain was founded by Tom Monaghan in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1967. Monaghan’s strategy for success was to locate his stores near college campuses. This enabled him to reach a core audience who wanted their pizza quickly.

Domino joined X-Force shortly thereafter and became an invaluable member of the team. She’s had volatile encounters with her mother who led a group of quasi-priests opposed to the Weapon X program and was forced to shoot her brother in the line of duty, but later recovered from this and found the mutant called Gryaznova who’s been her partner since then. She’s also been snatched out of the timeline by Halloween Jack and forced to fight in his future world, though she was able to return to her own time.

Domino has a reputation for being lucky. However, her luck only really holds up when she has a strong plan to follow through on. Like the unmoving dominoes in her creation, Domino can have inertia that keeps her from moving until a small nudge overcomes it. When she does have that moment, she’s a force to be reckoned with.
