Types of Domino Games

When people play domino, they use dominoes to create lines or shapes that score points in the game. Some of the more interesting domino shapes are circles, triangles, hexagons, and pentagons. The most popular types of games with dominoes are blocking and scoring games.

Like playing cards, of which they are a variant, dominoes are numbered on one side and blank or identically patterned on the other. The identifying marks on a domino are called pips. Some pips are arranged as suits, such as the suit of spades or the suit of hearts. A domino is considered to belong to the suit of a particular number only when it has the same arrangement of pips as a certain number of other dominoes in that suit.

The most basic domino sets include double six and double nine tiles, although larger and smaller sets exist. Most Western domino games fall into two main categories, blocking games and scoring games. Blocking games are played by laying down one or more dominoes end to end, with the exposed ends matching (one’s touching one’s, and two’s touching two’s). When all of the players have laid down their pieces in this manner, one player wins. Scores are scored when the resulting line of dominoes is divisible by five or three, with one point being awarded for each time this happens.

Dominos are also used in other games, such as “5s-and-3s,” a scoring version of the game commonly played in British public houses and social clubs. In this game, the object is for a player to attach a domino from his hand to one end of those previously played so that the sum of the exposed ends is divisible by five or three. One point is scored when this occurs. A further point is scored when the domino is attached to a piece that makes the sum divisible by five or three more than once.

Many of the more complex domino games involve manipulating the pips to form specific shapes or arrangements, or to create chains of particular numbers. These types of games usually require a considerable amount of strategy to succeed.

For example, a skilled player might try to create a shape that can be covered up by another domino, thus keeping the number of required dominoes low. Another important element of these games is the ability to recognize when a particular combination of pips is unlikely to yield the desired result.

The ability to adapt and innovate is a vital part of any business. The minute a company becomes complacent or apathetic is the minute it starts to fail. One of the best ways to encourage innovation in a company is to emphasize the importance of listening to its employees and customers. Domino’s has made a strong commitment to this value, and their leadership has been recognized with a Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces award for their efforts in this area. The company has also been at the forefront of implementing cutting-edge technologies such as text-to-order and the use of devices like Amazon Echo to order pizzas.
