Roulette has been a popular casino game since the 17th century and continues to offer glamour, mystery, and excitement. In addition to its entertainment value, roulette has a surprising level of depth for serious betters and can result in high payouts when correctly predicted.
The game consists of a spinning wheel with 36 numbers and a 0 (or a 00 on some American tables) along with a table map. A croupier will spin the wheel, while players place bets on the numbered slots or groups of numbers. There are several bet types, including “inside” and “outside” bets. Each type has its own house edge, so players should be aware of these before putting their chips down.
Each player gets a color of chips that corresponds with their betting amount. Dealers will ask players how many of their chips they want to designate for each bet. Depending on the minimum bet, this could be anywhere from $1 to $100 or more. The dealer will then hand the chips to the player. Players are not permitted to swap their chips for different values, and the color of each chip will be visible to other players at the table. This helps to prevent cheating and to avoid confusion, especially when there are multiple players at a single table.
Once the bets are placed, the dealer will spin the wheel and then roll a ball around the tilted circular track. The location of the number in the final stopping position determines the winning bet and its payout. Each number on the layout has a different cost to bet and pays off based on its location on the wheel. Zero, for example, costs 17 chips to bet and pays 235 chips.
While the film may not be a classic in the genre, it does a good job of portraying how young people can destroy their lives because of poor choices during times of low self-esteem, depression, peer pressure, or mental illness. The pacing of the story enhances this message and adds to the tension.
While this is not a traditional horror film, it will appeal to those who like psychological thrillers that keep the audience on the edge of their seats with mind games and questions without answers. The acting is very good and the camera work is innovative. While the film is not a masterpiece, it is very entertaining and is worth a viewing.
