Pens & Needles is not a wellness bible. We recognize that individuals—especially those living with chronic conditions—are already bombarded with advice about how to eat, exercise, and live. Rather than duplicate the voice of health authorities, we aim to foster robust dialogue about the social and cultural underpinnings of health. For instance, we are interested in the impact of stigmas on well-being, structural barriers to health, and the ways in which individuals’ health experiences shape and are shaped by wider society. We provide news, analysis, and commentary from a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives. In doing so, we build collaborations between patients, providers, policymakers, scientific researchers, disability advocates, humanities scholars, and other stakeholders. Our end goal is to advance the health and social initiatives most important to individuals who live with chronic conditions.
